FROM FATHER RICK

JEFF AKE

A little more than two and a half years ago Jeff Ake, a friend of parishioners Judy and Dave Dlesk, was taken hostage in Iraq while on business to build a water bottling plant to help bring safe drinking water to the community. Since then we have continued to pray in our weekly intentions for Jeff's safe return. We now expand our prayers to include Jeff's family, who are left to struggle with his absence with no word about him for over two years. A recent news feature helps put a face with a name and connect us to the family for whom we pray.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Needs Assessment Committee has reached a turning point in their process. Please read and respond to the following notice from this hard working committee:

The Needs Assessment Committee has been continuing its work to identify the current and future facility needs for the parish. At this point a list of improvements has been identified and prioritized, and the committee is working on developing several options to meet as many of the critical needs as possible. One of the important findings has been that many of us are not aware of the vast amount of activity that goes on in the St. Robert’s facilities each week because we each only participate in a few of the activities. In a typical week over 2,000 people will use the parish facilities for Mass, Generations of Faith, sacramental preparation, Country Day School, scouts, choir practices, Knights of Columbus, outreach ministries and all the other activities of the parish. The result is that the current facilities often don’t meet all the requirements of each of the activities. To fulfill our parish mission we must be able to have adequate facilities to worship, teach the faith, come together as a community and serve the needs of others.

If you have any comments or ideas on the facility needs or ideas for improvements, please share them with any of the Committee members: Kevin Conley, Dave Dlesk, Chris Durkee, Joe Galluzzo, Heather Lauten, Mary Sudol, Bill Sullivan or Bob Sullivan. You can also address your thoughts to the committee by sending a letter to the Parish Office.

GENERATIONS OF FAITH

This weekend we are celebrating our second Festival Weekend, during which we will reflect on our Baptismal Call to Holiness as we prepare for our community’s celebration of the Solemnity of All Saints on November 1. We will examine the very real and ordinary lives of the saints who are now in glory because they responded to and worked to be holy during their lives.

The openings that are still available are:

SUNDAY: 12:30 PM–3:30 PM (No adult session available)

SUNDAY: 5:00 PM–8:00 PM (Only adult session openings)

MONDAY: 5:00 PM–8:00 PM (All sessions open)

Please remember that the Festival begins with a common meal. The menu for this weekend is subs, salad, cookies, and hot cider.

The Event for this Festival is the Solemnity of All Saints, which will be celebrated with Masses on Thursday, November 1, at 12:10 and 5:30 PM. The 5:30 PM Mass will be followed by our usual Holyday Supper in Driscoll Hall.

PARISH FAMILY BREAKFAST

This Sunday morning, October 21, the Knights will hold their first Sunday Morning Breakfast in Driscoll Hall from 8:00 to 11:00 AM. Please plan to stop by.

Stewardship Reflection

“…be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient...”

2 Timothy 4:2

It is not always convenient to be a good steward, especially when all the temptations of our busy and materialistic world get in the way. Yet, we must be persistent even when it is inconvenient. This persistence marks the true follower of Christ.

Second Collection This Weekend–World Mission Sunday

“All the Churches for All the World”

What makes World Mission Sunday such an important celebration in our Church? As the title reminds us, it is a universal celebration carried out through the world in which all members in every country, diocese, and parish lift up their minds and hearts in solidarity with Christ, our Lord and Savior. We are asked to consider that the Church is larger than our own locale. The problems and challenges in our own place must be situated in the context of the larger Church. It is not just a “second collection”; it is a mindset, a mission mentality, celebrated on this day. Please be as generous as you are able.

Question of the Week–Twenty-Ninth Ordinary Sunday

Question for Adults: When you pray, what do you ask for most often? How do you know God gives you this request?

Question for Youth: As you grow older, you tend to "need" God less. But today, the readings tell us to pray with great faith? Why do you suppose this is such a key teaching of Jesus?

Question for Children: Jesus teaches us to trust God. How does God help you in your daily life?

Protecting God’s Children

This course is a one time only awareness training program that is a requirement for all volunteers working with children within any parish in the Archdiocese of Boston. There is a session upcoming here at St. Robert’s on Wednesday, November 14, from 7:00-9:30 PM. To register, please contact the Parish Office at 978-683-8922.

Ministry Exceptions Requested

The current liturgical ministry schedule runs through the weekend of November 25th. The next cycle will run from December 1/2 through the weekend of February 2/3. A separate schedule will be issued for the Christmas Masses. Please submit your known exceptions to availability by November 2 to Irene at ibonner@comcast.net or 978-683-8922.

Stewardship Prayer

Lord God, You alone are the source of every good gift, of the vast array of our universe, and the mystery of each human life. We praise you and we thank you for your great power and your tender, faithful love.

Everything we are and everything we have is your gift, and after having created us you have given us into the keeping of your Son, Jesus Christ.

Fill our minds with his truth and our hearts with his love that in His Spirit we may be bonded together into a community of faith, a parish family, a caring people.

In the name of Jesus, we commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, talent, our material gifts as an outward sign of the treasure we hold in Jesus. Amen.

"Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" - Lk 18:7-8

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK–THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A reading from the Book of Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18

The LORD is a God of justice, who knows no favorites. Though not unduly partial toward the weak, yet he hears the cry of the oppressed. The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint. The one who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches the heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds, judges justly and affirms the right, and the Lord will not delay.

A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

Beloved: I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.

At my first defense no one appeared on my behalf, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.

+ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 18:9-14

Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity–greedy, dishonest, adulterous–or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
